The Biden administration announced new carrot-and-stick immigration policies yesterday meant to prevent illegal migration.

The plan involves opening new asylum processing centers away from the Southern border. These centers will open in Guatemala and Colombia for now. Lawful asylum seekers will be able to apply for flights to the U.S., Spain, or Canada.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas praised the initiative yesterday.

The plan comes with stiffer penalties. For example, deported individuals will be barred from entering the U.S. for five years.

President Biden’s term has been marked by a historic amount of illegal border crossings. Another surge is anticipated when Title 42 expires in two weeks, leaving his administration scrambling to find a solution.

But President Biden finds himself walking a thin line as some in his own party criticize his plan.
