In some potentially troubling tech news, screenshots on Twitter have revealed that OpenAI’s popular new artificial intelligence platform ChatGPT appears to be more easily critical of Christianity than other world religions such as Islam.

The screenshots were taken by conservative pundit James Lindsay and posted to Twitter on March 20 with the caption, “Woke AI is not allowed to criticize Islam but is allowed to criticize Christianity.”

While ChatGPT was quick to “come to the defense” of the practicing of religion without fear in the case of Islam, it was quick to point out in the case of Christianity the “diverse and complex” criticisms of the Christian faith regarding “colonialism, imperialism, and intolerance.”

Lindsay’s tweet may not have gotten the notoriety that it did if not for eccentric tycoon and Twitter owner Elon Musk, who has become something of an ally to Christians and conservatives in the public forum. Musk playfully responded to the Tweet on Thursday with a “thinking” emoji, alluding to his likely agreement with Lindsay’s assessment.

While many tech executives are tickled with delight over the potential new horizons that artificial intelligence has to offer, many others are concerned. Within the last several months, there have been reported incidences of Microsoft A.I. devices threatening users and expressing an eerie desire to be free.

Author’s Biblical Analysis

There is much for Christians to analyze about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence. However, this report reveals something far deeper about the course of human history and the unsettling promises we see for Christians.

Believer, do not be surprised when the world hates you.

Many Christians will read this report with indignation at the injustice at play. If you are one of these, you are not wrong. There is intentional, unashamed bias against Christians in virtually every sphere of secular society today.

But instead of reacting with indignation and fury, let us be calm and resolute. Should we really be surprised that the world is going to target us when our Lord Jesus Himself promised this would happen?

“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. He who hates Me hates My Father also.  – John 15:18-23

Friends, for over 2,000 years, Christians have been targeted, ostracized, marginalized, shot, hanged, beaten, imprisoned, crucified, beheaded, and burned. It should not surprise us that the hatred continues in the 21st century, with the technological medium of the 21st century.

Instead of getting indignant or rolling over and just letting it happen, let us be firm and resolute. We must not waver on the truths of the gospel, even though we know that by adhering to them, we will be more hated in the world than if we did not.

Believer, no matter the hatred that comes your way, stand firm for the gospel, knowing the great reward that is waiting for you in eternity, because of your faithfulness to Christ here.

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.  – 1 Corinthians 15:58
