As the crowd of 2024 presidential nominees continues to grow, some — including a large portion of Democrats — are hoping that the current president doesn’t try to run again.
A poll conducted by The Economist/YouGov shows that 58% of respondents don’t want President Joe Biden to run again in 2024. Interestingly enough, at least a third of voters who opted for Biden in 2020 are looking for someone else to claim the Democrat ticket as well.
The poll was conducted from February 25 through 28 and took answers from 1500 U.S. adult citizens.
Just 24% of respondents indicated they did want Biden to go for a second term. In addition, 39% of those who voted for him in 2020 want him to try for a second term.
Unsurprisingly, more Republican respondents said Biden should not run again (83%) when compared to Democrat respondents (34%). Independent-aligned respondents were more reflective of the average, as 59% of this demographic said Biden should not run in 2024.
On the other hand, only 43% of Democrat respondents indicated that Biden should run again.
The survey also asked the same question of former President Donald Trump. For this question, 29% of all respondents said he should run again and 57% said he shouldn’t try for another presidential race.
However, a more telling data set comes in the form of the 2020 voters. Of those who voted for Trump in 2020, 55% want him to give it another shot while 29% say that he shouldn’t run again.
In a similar fashion to Biden’s results, Republicans were more likely to say Trump should run again (53%) and Democrats were more likely to say that he should not run again (81%).
This Economist/YouGov poll is part of a trend of other such data which shows Biden is losing popularity among voters.
A McLaughlin & Associates survey from mid-February pitted Trump against Biden and asked respondents who they would choose at that time. In the poll, 48% said they would at least lean toward picking Trump, while 44% said the same about Biden.
Other polls previously reported by FISM News show that neither Trump nor Biden may be the choice for either party. For Republicans, one poll showed growing support for Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, even though neither one has announced his intention to run.
