Reports coming out of Japan are suggesting that the nation recently discovered 7,000 previously unknown islands belonging to its territorial waters.

The Geospatial Information Authority of Japan conducted the first survey of its territorial surroundings since 1987.

Although the announcement of 7,000 islands sounds massive – it should be noted that the Japanese territory won’t increase but it will be more accurate than before.

Although Japan is mostly cataloguing already-existing islands, newly formed islands would not be much of a surprise. The Japanese Coast Guard found a new C-shaped island near Iwo Jima back in August of 2021.
