The Canadian province of Quebec is urging New York City Mayor Eric Adams to stop helping migrants illegally cross the U.S. Canadian border, per the New York Post, as Adams denies assisting migrants travel out of the country.

Earlier this month, the Post reported that the National Guard in NYC is handing out taxpayer-funded bus tickets to migrants so they can travel to Plattsburgh, New York, which is 30 minutes south of the Canadian border. Once there, migrants hire taxi drivers, who are standing by, to take them to the Canadian border.

“Any form of assistance to migrants crossing the border where it is strictly forbidden to do so should stop immediately,” said a spokesperson for Quebec Premier Francois.

“We understand that the situation of migrants in New York poses major challenges, but the situation in Quebec and particularly in Montreal is even worse and constitutes an important humanitarian issue.”

Mayor Adams appeared on CNN last Wednesday and denied reports of the city sending migrants to Canada. “​​No, we don’t send migrants to Canada, that needs to be clear,” Adams told host Don Lemon.

Lemon asked if previous reports of the city buying bus tickets to Canada were inaccurate. Adams said they were, while admitting the city does assist migrants travel elsewhere in the country.

“We are not encouraging anyone to go to another country,” Adams said. “If we speak with a migrant, interview them, [we] find out their desires and make sure that we are assisting them like we’ve done.” 

He said elsewhere in the interview, “Some stayed here. Overwhelmingly, the numbers stayed here, but there were those that wanted to go to other locations throughout this country and that is what we’re doing. That’s the right thing to do.”
