House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) declined to say whether or not she will remain as the Democratic House leader during an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos on Sunday.

Stephanopoulos asked Pelosi, “If Democrats keep the Majority, will you run again for Speaker?” 

“I’ve said I’m not making any comments until this election is finished, and we have a little more time to go,” Pelosi replied.

Separately Pelosi told CNN’s “State of the Union” program she “will always have influence,” regardless of which party controls the House in 2023. 

As of Monday morning Real Clear Politics shows Republicans with 212 seats and Democrats with 205 seats, with 218 being required for a majority. 

Earlier in the interview, Stephanopoulos asked Pelosi about Democrats’ success in the midterms, which she chalked up to candidates staying on message.

“They also rejected calls from Washington about, ‘Oh, your message should change.’ No, our message was clear – People Over Politics, lower costs, bigger paychecks, safer communities,” she said. “And they knew the value of a woman’s right to choose, they knew how important it was to protect our democracy, they knew the contrast between themselves and their opponents, and that is what made them win.”

Pelosi also gave credit to grassroots campaigning, saying Democratic volunteers knocked on “millions of doors.” She likewise praised President Joe Biden and former President Barack Obama for “presenting about our democracy being on the ballot.”

In the same interview, Pelosi said President Biden should run for reelection. “He has been a great President, and he has a great record to run on,” she said.
