Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) has refused to back down from his practice of transporting illegal immigrants to New York City even after the city’s mayor declaring a state of emergency due to the migrant influx.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) declared that his city was in a state of emergency this week, asking state and federal officials to assist his administration in dealing with what is reportedly an influx of more than 17,000 asylum seekers who have arrived in his city since April.
According to New York 1, the mayor is asserting that the city will spend over $1 billion on the migrants, most of whom are “adults who cannot legally work in this country.”
“The asylum seekers arriving here need more than a hot meal or a bed for a night. Without the ability to work legally in this country, they need long-term shelter, health care, and a great deal of institutional support,” Adams said. “It is straining the limits of our ability to provide care for New Yorkers in need, and it is burning through our city’s budget.”
Adams added, “New York City is doing our part, and now others must step up and join us. We need a coordinated effort to move asylum seekers to other cities in this country to ensure everyone is doing their part. Our right-to-shelter laws, our social services, and our values are being exploited by others for political gain. New Yorkers are angry. I am angry too.”
Abbott responded to Adams’s plea, saying that his state would continue to transport illegal immigrants away from border cities in Texas and into the sanctuary cities, such as New York, Chicago, and the District of Columbia.
“Sanctuary cities like New York City experience a FRACTION of what Texas border communities face every day,” Abbott said in a tweet linking to a report on the New York Mayor’s press conference. “We’ll continue busing migrants to NYC, DC, & Chicago to relieve our overwhelmed border towns until Biden does his job to secure the border.”

However, New York City’s problem may not be entirely the fault of Texas state-funded busing of migrants. Adams asserts that at least 17,000 asylum seekers have arrived in the city by bus from various border areas in recent months. According to Abbott, however, the state of Texas has only sanctioned the busing of about 2,900.
As of today, Texas has bused over 11,900 migrants to sanctuary cities:
➡️ Over 8,200 to D.C.
➡️ Over 2,900 to NYC
➡️ Over 870 to ChicagoTexas will continue busing migrants to help our overrun & overwhelmed border communities. #OperationLoneStar

While the issue of busing migrants to sanctuary cities has largely been seen as a Republican-versus-Democrat issue due to the prevalence of Republican governors moving migrants to Democrat-governed cities, it might be a fellow Democrat’s administration that is primarily at fault for Adams’ migrant issue.
According to a recent report by Reuters, the Democrat-led city of El Paso Texas has bused almost 9,000 illegal immigrants from the border to New York City and Chicago. About 7,000 of those migrants were sent to New York City.
New York isn’t the only community working on migrant migration, however. About 75 miles north, a small town in Orange County, New York, was surprised when a plane full of unaccompanied migrant minors was flown into their airport without any advance notice, according to Fox News. In this case, the transportation was done not by any Republican-led state, but by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement.
Montgomery police chief Paul Arteta and Mayor Steve Brescia told “Fox & Friends First” that the plane carrying 13-to-18 year-olds from Texas was an unexpected arrival.
“I’ve never seen anything like this before,” said Brescia, whose town is located in the Hudson Valley.
