The Houston Astros look unstoppable in this postseason.
Alex Bregman hit a three-run homer, Framber Valdez threw seven sharp innings and the Astros beat the New York Yankees 3-2 Thursday night for a 2-0 lead in the American League Championship Series.
The Astros, who won 106 games in the regular season, are off to a perfect 5-0 start this postseason after sweeping Seattle in the AL Division Series.
“They got a really tough pitching staff over there,” Bregman said about the Yankees. “They’re really good. So just trying to scratch and claw and battle and try and fight.”
Bregman connected in the third inning off Yankees starter Luis Severino to give Houston a 3-0 lead it never relinquished.
Anthony Rizzo’s RBI drove in New York’s first run and a single by Gleyber Torres plated another run to get the Yankees within 3-2. But Valdez struck out Josh Donaldson and Kyle Higashioka to preserve the lead in the fourth.
“The roof was open. It’s something that we’re not used to playing with usually here,” Valdez said through a translator. “But I think after that inning I was able to warm up properly. And then the curveball got a lot better from the third through the seventh inning. But those are all adjustments that we make in the middle of the game, and thankfully it did it.”
The open roof benefited the Astros when Aaron Judge hit a drive to right field that was caught at the wall. Without the wind, the ball probably would’ve left the ballpark.
The Yankees only have nine hits and four runs in the first two games of the ALCS, while striking out 30 times.
“I think the roof open kind of killed us,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.
The series shifts to New York for Game 3 on Friday. Gerrit Cole, who helped the Astros reach the 2019 World Series before signing with the Yankees, starts for New York. Lance McCullers is expected to pitch for the Astros.
