A vast majority of Americans across the political spectrum and of all ages believe there should be an age limit for elected officials.

A CBS / YouGov poll conducted from August 29-31 found a staggering 73% of Americans favor maximum age limits. Only 27% said there should be no age limits.

Broken down by party affiliation 71% of Democrats favor age limits as do 75% of Independents and Republicans.

The consensus remains true across all age groups as well. 68% of Americans ages 18-29 favor age limits, 75% between the ages of 30 and 64 agree with limits, and so do 74% of those 65 and older.

Answers ranged for what the maximum age for elected officials should be, though a large plurality (40%) suggest age 70 should be the limit. Others suggested age 60 (26%) and some believe age 80 should be the max (18%).

Meanwhile, 47% of Americans said politics would be better if more young people were elected – a larger percentage than any other demographic group offered. Only 12% said more older elected officials would make politics better.

According to CNN as of its beginning in January 2021 the current Congress is the oldest in at least the past 20 years. The median age in the House and Senate is currently 58.3 and 63.9 respectively.

In the Senate, 54% of Republicans and 46% of Democrats are over the age of 65, while in the House 23% of Republicans and 40% of Democrats are under 65.

Both President Joe Biden and President Trump were in their 70s when taking the oath of office. Trump was 70 and Biden 78, making Biden the oldest president in American history.
