Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill on Friday requiring schools to be transparent about their curriculum in his continued effort to give parents more of a say in decisions made about their child’s education.

According to a press release the bill “requires school districts to be transparent in the selection of instructional materials, including library and reading materials,” and “sets 12-year term limits for school board members.”
Specifically, the bill “requires school districts to have procedures that allow parents to see all books in the school library, all required classroom book lists, and any instructional materials a teacher intends to use,” as well as provide “parents with the opportunity to review all instructional materials, and object to materials they do not believe their children should utilize,” according to an official handout.
“In Florida, our parents have every right to be involved in their child’s education. We are not going to let politicians deny parents the right to know what is being taught in our schools. I’m proud to sign this legislation that ensures curriculum transparency,” DeSantis said.
Before the signing, DeSantis gave some examples of sexually explicit material that is currently available in some schools, such as the graphic novel “Gender Queer” which depicts children engaging in sexual activity
“Some people say if you don’t have every book under the sun in the library that you want to ban books,” DeSantis said. “That’s not true.”
In a Twitter post the Digital Director for Governor DeSantis, Robbie Myers, highlighted the graphic nature of some of the books the governor mentioned saying, “People need to see and hear why Governor Ron DeSantis is banning porn in schools and empowering parents to review curriculum.”
