Stacey Abrams, the former Congresswoman who hopes to unseat Brian Kemp in the upcoming Georgia gubernatorial race, is being lambasted by Republicans and mandate opponents the nation over after she tweeted a photo of herself sitting mask free in a room full of children who were required to wear masks because of a school rule Abrams supports.
According to a campaign spokesperson, who spoke to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Abrams had worn a mask most of the day and had only taken the mask off while reading to the children or while taking a picture.
“It is shameful that our opponents are using a Black History Month reading event for Georgia children as the impetus for a false political attack, and it is pitiful and predictable that our opponents continue to look for opportunities to distract from their failed records when it comes to protecting public health during a pandemic,” Abrams said in an Instagram post.
Abrams, who in 2020 garnered immense praise from the left for being a leader in efforts to “turn Georgia blue,” has since deleted the tweet but has not been spared on social media, where a virtual who’s who of Republican firebrands each took a turn sharing the deleted photo and calling Abrams out for ignoring her own rules while enforcing it on children.
“Tens of thousands of kids haven’t been able to see each other’s faces in school for two years,” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) tweeted. “But the same liberal politicians pushing the arbitrary mandates blatantly ignore their own self-imposed rules. Families have had enough. America’s students deserve normalcy.”

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) tweeted, “The only person who is high risk for COVID in the photo is not wearing a mask. They want you masked up and obedient. That’s why I tell them to kiss my mask.”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), long ago banned from Twitter, posted scathing criticism on upstart social media platform Gettr.
“Our children deserve so much better than hypocritical Democrats, with severe comorbidities, playing the #RulesForTheeGame,” Taylor Greene wrote. “While adults go mask free to concerts, sporting events, work, and restaurants, many of our nations kids are forced to wear masks. Shameful Stacey Abrams.”
David Perdue, who is also running for governor, posted a video in which he criticized both Abrams and Kemp.

Abrams has an interesting history with mask wearing.
In 2020, she was a vocal opponent of Kemp’s mandate that prevented Georgia cities from requiring residents to wear masks. In October of the same year, she wore a cloth mask that read “vote” while she posed for photos with soon-to-be First Lady Jill Biden.
Two months later, when she served as presiding officer of Georgia’s state electors meeting, she was frequently seen without a mask.
