On Wednesday Dec. 22, NHL executives are stopping all play until the day after Christmas due to an apparent surge in COVID-19 cases in professional sports leagues.
This temporary work stoppage comes to many of the players as a blessing in disguise, giving them an opportunity to spend the days right before Christmas, as well as Christmas Day, with their families. Two games were originally scheduled for Dec. 22, but at the last minute the nighttime contest between the Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers was cancelled.
The league will not have another game until Dec. 27. Furthermore, there will not be a game that requires teams to cross the American/Canadian border until Dec. 30. Upon re-entry to team facilities on Dec. 26, the league is also requiring all personnel to have a negative COVID-19 test.
In other sports news, Hall of Fame NFL linebacker Lawrence Taylor was arrested for failing to report a change of address to authorities. The 62-year-old Taylor has been a registered sex offender since 2011, which requires him by law to report any change of address.
Sources indicate that Taylor is pleading not guilty to this charge. His lawyer argued that he still legally lived in the same home in which he had been living, but in the wake of a pending divorce had been advised to sleep elsewhere.
Mr. Taylor was constantly a resident of the marital home where he was registered, but on advice of local law enforcement he was sleeping outside the home. We are confident that this will be dismissed at the first court hearing.
Taylor is known as one of the best linebackers in NFL history. He spent 13 seasons with a powerful New York Giants team that won two Super Bowls under head coach Bill Parcells and defensive coordinator Bill Belichick.
