After many years of European dominance, the United States dominated the 43rd Ryder Cup golf tournament to take back the Cup, winning by a score of 19-9 over Europe on Sunday. This set a record for the largest U.S. victory in Ryder Cup history, and the largest margin of victory since 1979.
The American team had two things they have not had in recent history – youth and emotion. They took advantage of playing on their home course, riding the energy of the home crowd at Whistling Straits Golf Club in Michigan.
Steve Stricker said afterwards,
This is a new era. These guys are young. They want it. They’re motivated. They came here determined to win. I could see it in their eyes.
The Americans won as a team, with every member pulling their weight throughout the weekend. Padraig Harrington, captain of Team Europe, praised the performance of his competitors afterward, saying,
The U.S. were very strong. Whatever their plan was, they got it right this week. A strong team, played well. Kept the momentum. And they would have been tough to beat at the best of times, let alone when they are at top form. It’s a great win for them.
In a humorous moment, it appears the months-long public feud between American golfers Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka may be over. Both were part of Team USA at the Ryder Cup, and after their victory, the two rivals shared an embrace while the rest of their team poked fun at them by singing the song, “Why Can’t We Be Friends.”
The moment we've all been waiting for. 🤗@b_dechambeau and @BKoepka hug it out. @RyderCupUSA
