An Ohio mayor is challenging his local school board members, who allowed pornographic material to be included the high school’s curriculum.

Mayor Craig Shubert of Hudson, OH came to the defense of his students and schools at a school board meeting this past week. The five-member school board had approved a book called “642 Things To Write About” for a college credit writing class which included a variety of mature and crass writing prompts. An example of the one of the assignments told students to “write a sex scene you wouldn’t show your mom” and then “rewrite the sex scene from above into one that you’d let your mom read.”

At the school board meeting, Shubert resolutely told the school board members that they must either resign or be charged for allowing child pornography into the school. Upon hearing Shubert’s words, many of those in attendance broke into applause.

Principal Brian Welch of Hudson High School apologized, saying the high school “overlooked” the lewd material in “642 Things”:

We did not exercise due diligence when we reviewed this resource and as a result, we overlooked several writing prompts among the 642 that are not appropriate for our high school audience. We feel terrible. At no time were any of these inappropriate prompts selected or discussed, but still they were there and they were viewable, and you can’t unsee them.

At this time, it is unclear whether any of the school board members have stepped down.

It is disheartening that this material ever reached the desks of high school students in the first place, but Mayor Shubert’s bold stance is commendable.
