To date, there are roughly 40 players remaining in the National Basketball Association (NBA) who have not received the COVID-19 shot. Understandably, these players sit under a great deal of duress from the majority of those in sports and the media who are pushing for the jab to become mandatory. On Monday, one of these 40 players firmly stated his position to refuse the shot.
During an interview with reporters, Golden State Warriors’ forward Andrew Wiggins was questioned about his refusal of the shot. He was also asked about the speculation of financial punishments for NBA players who decline the jab. Wiggins, who is a Christian, responded politely but firmly, “It’s my problem. Not yours.” According to ESPN, Wiggins applied for a religious exemption. Like so many Americans, his employer, the NBA, denied it.
Not only does Wiggins stand against the NBA; he now also must contend with the laws imposed by the city of San Francisco which limit the rights of the unvaccinated. Yet Wiggins is holding his ground. He further explained to reporters,
I’m confident in my beliefs and what I think is right, what I think is wrong. I’m just going to keep doing what I believe. Whether it’s one thing or another, just going to keep doing it.
Wiggins is a high-profile example of what many Americans are facing in the workplace now that vaccine mandates have become a reality. Many who refuse to get the vaccine now face loss of income despite the fact that the shot is not 100% safe or effective, natural immunity has been proven the most effective defense, and many Americans have legitimate health reasons to reject a shot.
Wiggins seems determined to stand his ground, even if it costs him his job.
