After the Supreme Court ruled in favor of a pro-life law enacted in Texas, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris issued scathing remarks on the highest court’s 5-4 decision. SCOTUS on Wednesday denied an appeal to the so-called “Heartbeat Bill” in Texas which bans abortions after a heartbeat can be detected, granting a big pro-life victory in the state.
President Biden said the ruling “is an unprecedented assault on a woman’s constitutional rights under Roe v. Wade,” and it ultimately “unleashes unconstitutional chaos.” He lamented that the law only allows a slim window for “a woman exercising her right to choose” and complained about the ability that citizens now have under the law to sue providers and individuals involved in commitying an abortion past the heartbeat deadline.
He said the majority’s ruling “insults the rule of law” in the nation.
For the majority to do this without a hearing, without the benefit of an opinion from a court below, and without due consideration of the issues, insults the rule of law and the rights of all Americans to seek redress from our courts. Rather than use its supreme authority to ensure justice could be fairly sought, the highest Court of our land will allow millions of women in Texas in need of critical reproductive care to suffer while courts sift through procedural complexities.
Biden also said he is directing his Office of the White House Counsel and his newly formed Gender Policy Council “to launch a whole-of-government effort to respond to this decision.” He will direct these groups to work with the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Justice to see if they can circumvent the new laws in any way.
Vice President Harris issued similar remarks in her statement saying the Court has “allowed a bounty law to go into effect in Texas.” She also committed to using “every lever of our Administration” to fight the new bill.
This decision is not the last word on Roe v. Wade, and we will not stand by and allow our nation to go back to the days of back-alley abortions. We will not abide by cash incentives for virtual vigilantes and intimidation for patients. We will use every lever of our Administration to defend the right to safe and legal abortion—and to strengthen that right.
