During a press conference yesterday, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas confirmed earlier reports that over 212,000 migrants were encountered at the border in July – the largest number in over 20 years, and a 413% increase from last July.
Mayorkas said that the situation at the border is “one of the toughest that we face,” and then acknowledged that the US was facing “an unprecedented number of migrants in between the ports of entry at our southern border.” He then tried to deflect concerns saying that “we have seen surges in migration before” and that “migrants encountered at our border are expelled or are placed in immigration enforcement proceedings.”
However, when he detailed the numbers of those expelled through Title 42, he admitted that while the majority of individuals are expelled, only 12% of families encountered are turned away.
Despite the historic numbers, Mayorkas says that the Biden administration does not intend to bring back Trump-era border policies, saying instead that they will continue to focus on “root problems” in countries migrants are fleeing from. He then took multiple shots at the Trump administration, trying to blame the crisis on his “cruel policies.”
Many politicians are pleading with the president to do something to help slow the border surge and have placed the blame firmly at the feet of Biden’s “open borders agenda.”
In March, Biden said the surge of illegal aliens crossing the border was “seasonal.”
He was wrong then, he is wrong now.
Biden’s open borders agenda led to this:
February: 101,120
March: 173,348
April: 178,622
May: 180,034
June: 188,829
July: 212,672#BidenBorderCrisis https://t.co/epv4gdwBsa— Ted Cruz (@tedcruz) August 12, 2021
Prior to the press conference, a group of south Texas officials met with Mayorkas and asked him to take “urgent action” to help their constituents. They said that the resources of border communities are being stretched and that they have experience a surge in COVID cases due to the unprecedented number of immigrants. A judge who was at the meeting likened the problem to a burst pipe, and that the communities are only being given “mops and buckets” to deal with it.
Democrat Laredo Mayor Pete Saenz who was at the round-table meeting said, “Whatever system they’re using is broken. It needs fixing.”
Many in the house are calling for the Department of Homeland Security and the Biden White House to be held accountable. Twenty-four House Representatives recently introduced a bill to censure Biden for his dereliction of duty at the border. In addition, Representative Andy Biggs introduced articles of impeachment earlier this week against Mayorkas for “presiding over a reckless abandonment of border security.”
I just filed articles of impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas.
His impeachment is well overdue and critical for the security of our nation.
