After a 50-year drought, the Milwaukee Bucks are champions of the NBA.  Behind a dominating 50-point performance from big man Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Bucks defeated the Phoenix Suns 105-98 in game 6 before their home crowd.  After falling behind to Phoenix Suns two games to nothing in the series, Giannis and the Bucks stormed back to win four straight games and claim the franchise’s second NBA title, its first since 1971.

The “Greek Freak” defied the odds in an NBA era where superteams rule and players often leave the franchise that drafted them for a better chance to win a title.  Before this season, Antetokounmpo signed a five-year contract extension to stay with the Bucks.  He said after the game,

Coming back, I was like, ‘This is my city. They trust me. They believe in me. They believe in us.’ … Obviously I wanted to get the job done. But that’s my stubborn side. It’s easy to go somewhere and go win a championship with somebody else. It’s easy. … I could go to a super team and just do my part and win a championship.  But this is the hard way to do it, and this is the way to do it, and we did it.

A disturbing footnote following the game – during the championship celebration in downtown Milwaukee where roughly 65,000 people were partying, a shooting occured at roughly 12:45 am Wednesday morning.  This marks the second public shooting to take place at or near a sporting event in the last week, after last weekend’s incident outside Nationals Park.  Fortunately, like the D.C. shooting, no one was killed.  Three people were injured, and according to sources, they are in stable condition.

Milwaukee police have arrested one supsect thus far.
