The Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Protestant denomination in the United States, removed four churches from membership this past week.  Two of the congregations were removed based on their denial of the sinful nature of homosexuality.  Towne View Baptist Church in Kennesaw, Georgia and St. Matthews Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky were each removed from the SBC for extending church membership to practicing homosexuals.  This removal does not affect either church’s operation, but they will no longer affiliate with the Southern Baptist Convention.

Dr. R. Albert Mohler Jr., President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, defended his denomination’s faithfulness to biblical authority with a tweet on Tuesday:

Anyone who argues that the Bible—OT and NT— is not clear about the sinfulness of homosexuality is either very confused or deliberately dishonest about the structure of biblical theology and the clear meaning of the texts.

The denomination removed two other churches from membership for another infraction: hiring sex offenders onto their pastoral staff.  The SBC removed Antioch Baptist Church in Sevierville, Tennessee, and Westside Baptist Church in Sharpsville, Pennsylvania.  Each church employs a pastor guilty of committing sexual abuse against a minor.  In the wake of many publicized and devastating sexual scandals against pastors, the Southern Baptist Convention is making a bold stand for biblical and moral faithfulness.   The denomination is not merely highlighting one specific sin while ignoring others, but rather it is committed to protecting its congregations, numbering just shy of 50,000, from all types of doctrinal and moral violations.
