Facebook announced new protocols for the 2020 presidential election. The company claims the purpose of these new rules is to “help secure the integrity of the US elections by encouraging voting, connecting people to authoritative information, and reducing the risks of post-election confusion.”
The social media site will not allow new political ads the week leading up to the election. They will also remove any posts that use COVID-19 to discourage voting, as well as adding additional information to any post that attempts to “delegitimize the outcome of the election or discuss the legitimacy of voting methods, for example, by claiming that lawful methods of voting will lead to fraud.”
Also “If any candidate or campaign tries to declare victory before the final results are in,” Facebook will direct users to the official tallies via sources such as “Reuters and the National Election Pool.”
Mark Zuckerberg released a lengthy statement on Facebook explaining what he believes the company’s role should be in this election: “We all have a responsibility to protect our democracy. That means helping people register and vote, clearing up confusion about how this election will work, and taking steps to reduce the chances of violence and unrest.”
