On Monday Iran issued an arrest warrant for U.S. President Donald Trump along with 35 others for the killing of top general Qassem Solemani via drone strike back on January 3rd. According to Tehran Prosecutor Ali Alqasimehrthe, warrants were for charges of murder and terrorist action. Ali said Iran had asked Interpol to issue a “red notice” for Trump and the other individuals. Red notices are “issued for fugitives wanted either for prosecution or to serve a sentence. . .” and serve as “a request to law enforcement worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.”
Interpol has since rejected Iran’s request in a statement saying “Under Article 3 of INTERPOL’s constitution ‘it is strictly forbidden for the Organization to undertake any intervention or activities of a political, military, religious or racial character’ . . . Therefore, if or when any such requests were to be sent to the General Secretariat, in accordance with the provisions of our constitution and rules, INTERPOL would not consider requests of this nature.”
In a press conference on Monday Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook shrugged off Iran’s actions, “This is a political nature. This has nothing to do with national security, international peace, or promoting stability … It is a propaganda stunt that no-one takes seriously. . .”
