President Trump is issuing an Executive Order to bolster the child welfare system in the United States. This order aims to support organizations working to keep families together and find children in need permanent homes. Among other changes, the order will improve resources for caretakers, children, and families including trauma-informed training.
Additionally, and order will increase transparency within the system on key statutory child welfare requirements and guide States on how best to support high-quality legal representation for parents and children.
There are currently more than 400,000 children and youth in foster care in the United States and each year, around 20,000 children will age out of the system without the support of a family to count on.
According to the White House website, “youth that age out without the support of a permanent home are shown to experience higher rates of homelessness, incarceration, and unemployment. Each and every child deserves a forever family, and the Trump Administration is working with partners at all levels to champion this cause and ensure that no child is forgotten.”
