If you have been taking the extra precaution of wiping down your groceries to protect yourself from the Coronavirus, the CDC has issued an update that might help you breathe a bit easier. According to the CDC website, while it is possible for the virus to spread via surfaces, the chances are unlikely.
The website states “It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes,” however, “This is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads, but we are still learning more about this virus.” The site goes on to say “In general, because of poor survivability of these coronaviruses on surfaces, there is likely very low risk of spread from food products or packaging.”
The primary risk of transmission is “person-to-person through respiratory droplets.” For this reason the CDC is still recommending social distancing of at least 6ft.
