The situation in Afghanistan is rapidly deteriorating as the US and other international nations withdraw the last of their troops from the country. The Taliban seems determined to continue to fight the Afghani government and take over the country. The group is a radical Islamic organization that seeks to implement a strict Islamic society in Afghanistan. Now that the US and other international countries have mostly left Afghanistan the Taliban are seizing on this chance of apparent weakness and in many cases are winning.

The families of the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks are asking President Biden to declassify government documents associated with the attacks that they say will demonstrate that Saudi Arabia gave its approval of the attacks. The families back up their request by telling President Biden not to come to the 20th Anniversary Memorial event if he fails to declassify the requested documents. The families communicated their request by way of letter and approximately 1700 people signed it.

President Biden signed a law that was unanimously passed in the Senate awarding local law enforcement four congressional gold medals for their bravery and service during the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. The bill also passed in the House 414-21. The congressional gold medal is the highest award that Congress can bestow. These medals will be displayed at the Capitol Police headquarters, the Smithsonian Institution, the Metropolitan Police Department headquarters, and the US Capitol.

Allyson Felix has officially become the most decorated American track and field Olympian of all time. On Saturday, she secured her 11th medal by winning the gold in the 4×400 meter relay alongside fellow American running stars, Sydney McLaughlin, Dalilah Muhammed, and Athing Mu. With her win she surpasses Carl Lewis, who was the previous track and field medal record holder with 10 total medals.

Senators will reconvene on Saturday in efforts to pass the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill, which will provide funding for roads, bridges, railways, and more. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act has been in discussion since last week with over two dozen amendments being proposed, debated, and voted on. While the initial underlying bill was generally agreed upon by both parties, since it has been put forward for debate on the Senate floor a number of senators have bogged down the progress toward passage by introducing a number of amendments.
