Another Russian-American journalist was detained by Russia Friday.
Alsu Kurmasheva, editor at Radio Free Europe, is accused of not registering as a foreign agent in the country and spying on Russian military activities, according to state media. The Biden administration is aware of her arrest.
Kurmasheva is the second US journalist arrested by Russian authorities this year, following Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who faced espionage charges back in the spring.
According to a state news agency, Kurmasheva was seen in court Friday in the city of Kazan in central Russia, where she could face up to five years in prison. Her lawyer said she wasn’t guilty of the reported charges, and that she needs to be released immediately.
