President Joe Biden joined a United Auto Workers picket line in Michigan Tuesday.

One presidential historian believes that’s a first in U.S. history since previous presidents wanted to avoid the perception of taking sides. But Biden declared he would stand with the workers as they “fight for a fair share of the value they helped create.”

The visit comes one day before former President Donald Trump gives a speech in front of union members in Detroit. The Republican frontrunner is skipping the second Republican primary debate on Wednesday in favor of delivering the primetime speech.

Trump claimed in a Truth Social post that Biden had no intention of visiting Michigan until Trump’s speech was announced.

The union hasn’t yet publicly endorsed any candidate. Meanwhile, Union members are gradually shifting to the right of the political spectrum according to recent polls.
