Calls of an unfairly politicized Justice Department have been renewed after five pro-life advocates were jailed on Tuesday.

A jury found all the activists guilty of violating both civil rights and the FACE Act. The champions for the unborn now face 11 years in prison and a fine of up to $350,000.

The activists found evidence that a D.C.-based abortionist may have let viable babies die within his facility. When police shrugged off an investigation, they peacefully protested at the clinic. Despite this, the court convicted them of violent crime.

The presiding judge also shrugged off concern that the abortionist in question may have committed federal crimes against children.

But Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) notes that the FACE Act should also protect the 88 crisis pregnancy centers that have been attacked since the Dobbs decision. In his words, the response to those violent acts has been “anemic.”

Cruz said that Attorney General Merrick Garland “has thoroughly politicized our federal law enforcement and our system of justice.”
