China’s latest map has upset Asian countries after the communist nation drew borders that claimed swaths of neighboring territories.
The map was published on Monday and conveniently redraws boundaries to include the entire South China Sea. It also adds territory from India, Taiwan, Japan, and Russia.
Most of the land territory involves islands that have been formerly disputed. But China also make a land grab into a northeastern Indian territory that China claims is part of Tibet.
India, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Japan have all rejected the map. But even though the map lists China as the sole possessor of a 135-square-mile island, Russian President Vladimir Putin has been silent.
Meanwhile, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin has responded that the other nations should see the map in an “objective and rational” way.
