For the second time this month, China is claiming to have a CIA spy in its custody.
China’s top anti-espionage agency, the Ministry of State Security, or MSS, announced Monday that a 39-year old government employee named Hao was under arrest. This is the second time the MSS has alleged that a Chinese student overseas was recruited by the American agency before returning to work for China.
The MSS claimed that Hao was studying in Japan when a US embassy employee developed a close relationship with the student, introduced Hao to a CIA employee, and “instigated Hao into rebelling.”
This comes as just last month, China revised its anti-espionage law, which the US immediately recognized as a threat.
A level three travel advisory is still in effect.
