House Republicans are introducing a new bill that would expand the child tax credit to include the unborn. Iowa Congresswoman Ashley Hinson introduced her comprehensive pro-family package Monday.
The “Providing for Life Act” would make the child tax credit claimable for children a year before their birth. It also raises the amount to $4,500 per child who is 5 or younger and to $3,500 for those between the ages of 6 and 7.
Hinson says that providing for a child begins when a woman finds out she is pregnant. The current tax credit is $2,000 per dependent regardless of age.
The act would also enhance paid parental leave coverage, fund pregnancy resource centers, and would make the Adoption Tax Credit fully refundable. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) introduced a Senate version of the bill.
