House Republicans voted down a measure to expel the scandal-ridden George Santos, instead sending the matter to the Ethics Committee.
Santos faces thirteen felonies, mostly for wire fraud and money laundering. Democrats attempted to expel him yesterday, but Republicans instead voted to send the matter to the Ethics Committee.
The resolution passed 221-204 along party lines. Representative Ritchie Torres, a Democrat, criticized Republicans.
But very few Republicans support Santos at this point. Instead, they say a member has never been expulsed without an ethics report.
Several Republicans frequently criticize the New York representative as they call on him to resign. For example, Republican Congressman Anthony D’Esposito called him a stain when discussing the resolution.
Seven Democrats abstained from voting. This includes all five on the Ethics committee, who say it would be improper to vote on a matter going to them.
The Ethics Committee appointed Rep. Michael Guest to head the investigation. They hope to push through a recommendation within sixty days.
