Anyone who lives in or near the state of Maine may have a chance to make a good chunk of change – provided you can locate a downed meteorite.
Bits of falling meteorite landed near the border between Maine and New Brunswick, Canada on April 8. The Maine Mineral and Gem Museum is looking to add the material to its collection, and is offering a $25,000 reward for a 2.2 pound sample.
While this is an exciting endeavor, there is no guarantee that there is enough meteorite material to match the museum’s desired sample amount.
NASA, which conducted radar sweeps in the area, noted that the meteorite masses they discovered range anywhere between 0.004 pounds and 0.7 pounds. However, the space agency says larger, undetected masses “may have fallen.”
