The saga surrounding WNBA star Brittney Griner has exceeded the attention normally given to a sports story and has truly become a national story of political intrigue. The latest update involves Griner’s homosexual cohabitation partner, Charelle Griner.
FISM News recently reported that Griner, who is awaiting the outcome of her trial for drug possession in a Russian prison, wrote a personalized letter to President Joe Biden asking for help to be freed from prison. Griner was arrested back in February on possession of cannabis cartridges, just before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Many believe the heightened tension between the US and Russia has contributed to Griner’s prolonged detention.
The WNBA star could face up to ten years in Russian prison if proven guilty.
On Wednesday, Charelle Griner went on an interview on CBS Mornings and voiced her displeasure with Biden’s silence and lack of action. When asked about what Brittney must be feeling, Charelle said, “She is probably the strongest person that I know, so she doesn’t say words like that lightly. That means she truly is terrified that she may never see us again. You know, I share those same sentiments.”
She continued, saying it was “very disheartening” that her repeated pleas to the president have fallen on deaf ears, which she believes put Brittany in the position to write to Biden herself.
She said, “It kills me every time that — you know, when I have to write her and she’s asking, ‘Have you met with them yet?’ And I have to say no… I’m sure she is like ‘I’m going to write him and ask now because my family has tried to no avail, so I’m going to do it myself.'”
The Griner trial is in recess right now, and it will pick up again on July 7. FISM News will follow the details as they emerge.
