On Sunday, the FBI Denver office announced in a press conference that female remains “consistent” with Gabby Petito had been found near Grand Teton National Park, bringing a tragic end to a saga that had gripped the nation.
Supervisory Special Agent Charles Jones stated, “Full forensic identification has not been completed to confirm 100% that we found Gabby, but her family has been notified.” The cause of death is still unknown and the police are asking that anyone “who utilized the Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area between the dates of August 27 and August 30. Anyone that may have had contact with Gabby, or her boyfriend or who may have seen their vehicle in that area” to share that information with the FBI.
The remains were not found far from where the white van that was being used by Petito and her boyfriend Brian Laundrie was seen on Aug. 27 by two vloggers:
The “Red White & Bethune” family bloggers have given me permission to share this video.
The family says they were driving through Grand Teton National Park around 6pm on August 27th and spotted Gabby Petito’s van.
They were just going through old video and saw the van. pic.twitter.com/jKA8xjphcd— Brian Entin (@BrianEntin) September 19, 2021
Additionally, the police continue to search for Laundrie, who disappeared from his parents’ house on Tuesday. Laundrie has been identified as a person of interest in the case and had refused to talk to police since Petito had been reported missing and a nationwide search for her had begun. Law enforcement had conducted a massive man hunt for Laundrie in Carlton Reserve over the weekend, with no results. FBI Tampa tweeted:
#UPDATE: The #FBI is executing a court-authorized search warrant today at the Laundrie residence in North Port, FL relevant to the Gabrielle “Gabby” Petito investigation. No further details can be provided since this is an active and ongoing investigation. @FBIDenver pic.twitter.com/uxrtVNIZ4u
