On Wednesday New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio announced the city will be establishing COVID-19 quarantine checkpoints at entry points, such as bridges and tunnels with heavy traffic. This policy is to ensure that those visiting from any of the 35 states on New York’s travel advisory list observe a 14-day mandated quarantine.
States with more than 10 coronavirus infections per 100,000 people on a seven-day moving average are added to the travel advisory list. New Jersey and Connecticut share the same travel list.
“Travelers coming in from those states will be given information about the quarantine and will be reminded that it is required, not optional,” De Blasio told a news briefing. He emphasized that the repercussions for disobeying the quarantine can be relatively severe, with a potential fine of up to $10,000.
“This is serious stuff and it’s time for everyone to realize that if we’re going to hold at this level of health and safety in this city and get better, we have to deal with the fact that the quarantine must be applied consistently to anyone who’s traveled,” De Blasio explained.
