Republicans are gearing up for a fight with Senate Democrats over funding for Israel.

Yesterday, the House passed a $14.3 billion aid package in a vote of 226 to 196. The bill has proven to be highly contentious among Democrats, as it contains no additional funding for Ukraine and seeks to offset costs by redirecting funding from the IRS, a plan Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has called a poison pill.

Recently, the Democratic opposition was given ammunition by the Congressional Budget Office, which says diverting costs from the IRS could add nearly $27 billion to the deficit over the next 10 years thanks to lost revenue. But Speaker Johnson is dismissing the report, claiming the CBO isn’t always accurate.

Schumer is outright refusing to take up the House bill, saying the Senate will instead work on a bipartisan bill that includes funding for Ukraine and humanitarian assistance for Gaza.
