The United Nations Security Council is sending a first-of-its-kind multinational force to Haiti in an effort to help the beleaguered island nation reestablish order.
The security support mission is meant to help Haiti’s national police quell surging gang violence and restore security across the Caribbean nation. So far this year, the island has seen 3,000 homicides and 1,500 instances of kidnapping for ransom.
The United States and Ecuador co-penned the successful resolution after Haiti called for international assistance. Haitian President William Ruto responded positively to the initiative.
Kenya is expected to lead the 12-month mission and has already pledged 1,000 policemen to the cause. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that he’s looking to Congress to provide $100 million in foreign assistance for the mission.
