Over a year since the overturning of Roe v Wade, abortions are apparently rising in the US.
New data from research group WeCount shows that, between July 2022 and June 2023, abortions dropped off dramatically in pro-life states but spiked in pro-abortion states. It’s estimated doctors in those states performed over 116,000 more abortions than expected.
The only silver lining is that states with strict abortion laws produced 114,000 fewer abortions than if Roe was never overturned. But that still equals out to an increase of about 2,000.
WeCount says the spike could be attributed to the rise in telehealth abortions and patients traveling to pro-life states for the procedure.
However, some pro-life groups are skeptical of the new numbers, noting that previous data sets seemed to indicate an overall drop in abortion. They say WeCount’s numbers will have to be compared to health department data for a better picture.
