The Supreme Court removed limits on how the Biden administration can interact with social media companies on Friday.

The decision reverses a lower court decision that found it likely that key departments used intimidation to make platforms unfairly censor conservative points of view. Most of the posts involved COVID-19 or election security.

Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar argued in her emergency appeal that those courts erred because they failed to identify a specific threat to the companies.

Justices Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, and Clarence Thomas wanted to reject the emergency appeal. In his dissent, Alito wrote that he feared some would interpret the decision as a “green light to use heavy-handed tactics.”

The justices will still hear arguments in the free speech lawsuit filed by Louisiana and Missouri.
