Hunter Biden appeared before a Delaware court Tuesday morning and pleaded not guilty to gun-related charges.
The three charges set against him say he lied about his drug use while purchasing a handgun. Biden’s attorney has previously criticized these charges, saying they are illegitimate.
Still, the stage is now set for the first criminal trial for an adult child of a sitting president currently campaigning for reelection.
Hunter had almost avoided this trial under a widely-panned “sweetheart deal” earlier this year. Under this arrangement, he would have resolved the gun charges by pleading guilty to misdemeanor tax violations.
That deal was rejected by a U.S. District judge in Delaware after it received large amounts of criticism from Republicans for “protecting” the president’s son.
