On the heels of Louisiana Congressman Mike Johnson’s assumption of Speaker duties, the House passed a pro-Israel resolution with overwhelming support.
The resolution also calls for Hamas to release living hostages and return any bodies of deceased hostages. The bulk of Congress, 412 of 435 representatives, approved the four-page resolution, but more than a dozen progressive Democrats voted “nay” or “present.”
Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) stated she opposed the bill as being one-sided. Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has since introduced articles to censure Tlaib for her anti-Semitic beliefs.
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) was a notable conservative who voiced opposition, saying he could not support the bill because it calls for sanctions on Iran and includes language that could be interpreted as committing U.S. troops to the conflict.
