The Biden administration is now pushing for more eco-friendly gas heaters in residential areas across the U.S.
The administration announced late Friday a proposal for new regulatory requirements that target gas-powered furnaces, claiming that the new models reduce household utility costs by $1.5 billion while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The finalized regulations would require furnaces to convert 95% of natural gas into heat, a 15% increase from current requirements.
The plan would take less efficient furnaces off the market by 2028. Unfortunately, for consumers, lower-efficiency models tend to be cheaper to purchase and install. In a 2,000-square-foot home, the difference could be around $8,000.
