Friday, President Joe Biden announced a first-of-its-kind federal office of gun violence prevention. The office will coordinate efforts across the federal government to help states concerned with increased gun violence.

It will be overseen by Vice President Kamala Harris and led by longtime gun policy adviser Stefanie Feldman.

NBC reports the office will play a key role in implementing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, a 2022 law that strengthened background checks for buyers under 21 and incentivized states to implement “red flag” laws to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals.

Throughout his presidency, Biden has urged lawmakers to ban so-called “assault weapons” and high-capacity magazines.

Biden released a statement saying the newly formed office is meant to serve as a stopgap in lieu of congressional action.
