It appears as though Mexican officials are trying to send a message to U.S. border patrol about knocking down walls rather than building them up.

Last month in Tijuana, Mexican officials took it upon themselves to install a concrete slab which once belonged to the Berlin Wall. A plaque near the base of the slab reads, “May this be a lesson to build a society that knocks down walls and build bridges.”

The move was made by Tijuana Mayor Montserrat Caballero and former Mexican foreign secretary Marcelo Ebrard.

Commenting on the installation of the Berlin Wall remnant, Caballero admitted that the crisis faced by Mexico and the U.S. today is different than that of 20th century Berlin. She also said that the U.S. has a right to maintain and enforce its agreed-upon border.

However, Caballero still maintained that “it’s a wall at the end of the day. And a wall is always a sphinx that divides and bloodies nations.”
