Hunter Biden continues to be a priority for Congressional Republicans, especially as the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden ramps up.
On Tuesday, House Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken in which he requested various documents and communications regarding the “State Department’s perception of the Ukrainian Office of the Prosecutor General, at the time headed by Viktor Shokin.”
Furthermore, the letter states that the committee wished “to understand the State Department’s sudden change in disposition towards the Ukrainian Office of the Prosecutor General in late 2015.” At this time, Shokin was applauded and praised by various U.S. officials for his anti-corruption efforts in Ukraine.
However, according to the letter, “the removal of Prosecutor General Shokin became a condition of the loan guarantee by the United States” in late 2015. Shokin was then dismissed in March of 2016, the timing of which was deemed “notable” by Comer.
But Comer’s Committee isn’t the only one still seeking further information. Also on Tuesday, the House Judiciary Committee, led by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), sat down with former FBI official Timothy Thibault in a closed-doors meeting.
Thibault worked as an assistant special agent in charge at the FBI’s Washington Field Office and was involved in the Justice Department’s 2018 investigation into Hunter Biden’s business dealings.
Upon Republicans’ Congressional investigation into Hunter Biden, Thibault was accused of trying to dismiss the federal investigation. Specifically, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) accused Thibault of trying to halt the investigation and portray evidence against Hunter as disinformation.
Thibault’s legal team continues to say that he was not a supervisor on the federal investigation.
Regardless, the ex-FBI official was seen meeting with the House Republicans at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. While the specifics of the meeting are still unknown, it is expected that this testimony will be used as evidence in the grander impeachment inquiry against President Biden.
The Judiciary Committee also interviewed another individual, who is reportedly pushing back on some whistleblowers’ claims regarding David Weiss, the top federal prosecutor in the Hunter investigation.
An interview transcript seen and reported by the Washington Post shows Thomas Sobocinski disputing the claim that Weiss was hindered by the Justice Department in charging Hunter Biden. The Post claims that Sobocinski did say the Weiss was slow in making that decision, but ultimately had “the authority” to bring the charges.
