Attorney General Merrick Garland defended himself from House Republican accusations that his DOJ targets religious Americans – citing his own Jewish background as part of his defense.

Garland became visibly upset when asked about an FBI memo from earlier this year naming so-called “Radical-Traditional Catholics” as possible domestic terrorists. The exchange was with Congressman Jeff Van Drew (R-N.J.) during Wednesday’s Judiciary Committee hearing.

That memo, originally from the FBI Richmond Field Office, was leaked earlier this year by an FBI whistleblower. It warned of “racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists in radical-traditionalist Catholic ideology.”

Garland told Van Drew he was unaware if anyone was fired over the document.
