The FBI apparently had so many paid informants at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, that the agency had to take an audit to discover them all.

That’s according to the closed-door testimony of Steven D’Antuono, the former assistant director of the Washington field office. He told the House Judiciary Committee that the FBI had to poll all field offices that had spies in the crowd. D’Antuono said they got responses back. When asked how many were there, he answered only that it was “a handful.”

Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) called the testimony extremely concerning. He wrote that it suggests the bureau “lost control of its CHSs present at the Capitol on January 6.”

The FBI doles out an average of $42 million to its informants each year. However, the bureau is accused of not fully vetting these applicants.

In somewhat related news, Ray Epps, who some claimed was an FBI plant, has been charged with a misdemeanor in connection with the Capitol riot.
