You might want to stop giving your kid the iPad. A new study indicates that increased screen time among toddlers closely correlated with developmental delays.

The Japan-based study measured the screen time – including watching TV, playing video games, and using phones and tablets – of more than 7,000 mother-child pairs.

The data showed a close association between greater screen time at 1 year old and developmental delays, specifically in communication and problem-solving,  at 2 to 4 . But results also depended on what type of screen time the child was experiencing.

Although greater screen time was associated with decreased language skills overall, screen time spent on educational programs was associated with increased language skills.
