Military leaders have staged a coup in another African nation, this time the Central African country of Gabon.

The coup leaders announced Thursday that they had seized control from President Ali Bongo. Bongo won his third presidential campaign the same day and is now urging allies to rally behind him. But he doesn’t appear to have a lot of local support.

The deposed president and his father have ruled the nation for 55 years despite civilians’ growing discontent. The events come one month after a similar mutiny in Niger.

Gabon is an oil-rich country, making the potential destabilization of the country a global concern. The White House is following the events with “great concern.”
