The Defense Department has been taking considerable flak for how it handled the American evacuation from Afghanistan. That criticism continues upon the discovery of new emails showing that, at the time, the top officials at the Department were working on a climate change initiative.

According to an exclusive report from The Daily Wire, Defense officials worked with the White House to finalize the Climate Adaptation Plan, which essentially declares climate change a major national security risk. The emails show frustration from climate change-minded Pentagon officials at how slowly the plan was moving forward.

Two specific officials were behind the push. One email exchange on the day of the final evacuation showed the two begrudgingly “standing by” as they waited for Secretary Lloyd Austin to sign the plan.

DoD told the Daily Wire that Austin did review this plan at the time of the withdrawal, but that Afghanistan was his priority.
